83 Glyde Street — Streets of East Freo

No. 83 (previously was no. 147) Glyde street is a single storey house constructed of rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is an example of a Federation period house adapted in the immediate Post-World War II period. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by picture and side hung casement windows. The facade features a replacement verandah. There is an elevated garden bed that extends past the line of the verandah. The garden is retained by a rendered masonry wall. A stairway goes from the street level to the garden and to the verandah.

HISTORY

From 1909-1910 Captain J. J. Sale lived next door at no 81 and from 1911 - 1915 he (sometimes) and his family lived here. See his story under the Notable People section.

1911 Captain J. J. Sale, the Independent candidate for the Williams-Narrogin seat, addressed a meeting of electors in the Narrogin Town Hall… in opening he:

“repudiated any suggestion that the Liberal League were defraying any of his expenses and that he was running 'in the interests of Mr. Cowcher. was an independent and had before him portions of the policy of each party, Some he was in accord with whilst others, which he considered were not for the good of the people as a whole, he disagreed with. 1912 Narrogin Departure of Captain J. J. Sale. After a period of useful citizenship, during which he strove in many ways to be of service to the community, Captain J. J. Sale departed from our midst on Tuesday last. Modest and unassuming to the last, the genial captain did not make the date of his intended departure known until the last moment, consequently the townspeople were debarred from according him that public honor which his past services on their behalf warranted... 1933 Obituary. Captain J. J. Sale. Only Survivor Of Historic Survey Party, Perth (W.A.) Captain James Jones Sale, of Leederville, died yesterday. He was the last surviving member of the exploration party led by the late Lord Forrest, which in 1870 travelled from Albany to Adelaide, surveying the route for the inter-State telephone. (reference)
