318-320 Canning Highway, Bicton ( Now demolished 1970’s-now been covered with two sets of flats).

HISTORY

My Grandparents’ old house called St Gerard’s which was on Canning Highway, Bicton, was demolished in the 1970’s. The family referred to the property as ’the homestead’ as it was on a very large area of land and we think they lived there from 1944 until 1968.

My Grandfather, George Good was a Ship’s Engineer from Kilmarnock, Scotland, who worked at Fremantle Harbour after the war on the Lady Forrest pilot boat (which is in the Maritime Museum). My Grandmother, Irene Good was a teacher who worked at East Fremantle Primary and Bicton Primary. She also was an amateur artist who won many Royal Show prizes and she painted St Gerard’s (see photo). There were five boys and one girl and they were well known around Fremantle. My Father, William Good was a telegraph boy during the school holidays and he told stories of flying down Canning Highway to the old East Fremantle Post Office on the messenger bike.
